CHAPTER FIVE
On the evening of the day that proceeded the appointed day for the proposed journey to Okechukwuâs hometown, he got everything ready with the aid of the other members of the family. The news of his travelling to the village rapidly spread throughout the town like wildfire in the harmattan. Some of his friends paid him visits to know whether what they heard was true. Okchukwu had done a lot himself by spreading the news. Also, his uncle and all the members of the family had hands in propagating the news about his travel to the village.
âIs it true that you are leaving us to spend the holidays in your hometown?â Kalu, one of Okechukwuâs friends, enquired when they visited him to know how the matter really stood and to know the truth about the rumour making round. âSo you were serious, after all?â
âYes, didnât I tell you that my uncle made a promise to me that if I came second of third this term in my class, he would take me to village to spend the holidays? Now, having attained his requirement, he has agreed to take me to our village so that I will spend the holiday there with my family and play with other children in the village and enjoy their warm association. Oh, I can now remember the games we used to play when I was in the village. Hide and seek, bird-hunting, fishing, childrenâs wrestling, moonlight plays and a lot of other enjoyable games. Iâll be so glad to see myself in the village in no distant time from now.â
âYou are really going to enjoy the holidays,â Uzondu said. âHow we wish we were you.â
They talked on about the issue for a while.
âThatâs very true,â concurred Amah. âYou are fortunate indeed. We wish you a safe journey and happy holiday experiences there in your village. Send our regards to the people of your village. Tell them we love them so dearly when you get to your village.â
âWeâll come back tomorrow morning to see you off. Thanks,â Kalu promised.
They departed.
The following day, at around nine oâclock in the following, Okechukwu and his uncle had already gotten ready for the journey home.
Then, Okechukwu left home for the park with the company of his uncle and other members of the family. His friends also come to see him off and to bid him farewell. Okechukwu and his uncle carried no luggage because the other members of the family and Okechukwuâs friends helped in carrying the loads. Neighbours too came to wish them a safe journey.
âSo, it is true you are leaving us?â one of the neighbours asked happily.
âYes,â Okechukwu replied, âbut I will not stay long; I will come back after the holiday.â
âGo well; I wish you good and peaceful travel,â another neighbour said, a strongly built man.
âRemember to bring us something from your village,â yet another requested. âBring us something special from your village whenever you are returning.â
Okechukwu and his uncle departed home and headed for the town park, accompanied by neighbours, friends, well-wishes and family members.
